My first trip to Humayun Tomb and Old Fort

Our school, Sri Venkateshwar International School, Dwarka, Sec 18, in Collaboration with ITIHAAS organized a trip to the Humayun Tomb and The Old Fort and the Light and Sound show held in the Old fort. The trip was to be held on 13th March 2015, but due to crowd, the trip was postponed for 16th March 2015.

So on 16th, I reached my school at 11:30 a.m. which was the reporting time.

At 12 noon we left from our school for Humayun Tomb. In the bus, I sat with two of my good friends, Yajur and Parav. We played with my Rubik’s Cube. We also saw the India Gate and the ITC Maurya.

After an hour, we reached the Humayun Tomb. We first went to Bu-Halima’s Garden or Bu-Halima ka bagh which is the main entrance to the mausoleum. There we sat down and there were some people from ITIHAAS who told us everything about the places we visited named. The name of one sir was Sarthak Sir. Then we were divided into two groups. Parav was in my group but Yajur was in another group.

Then our group went to the place just outside the room where Emperor Humayun’s Cenotaph was made. A cenotaph is a false grave used to mark the exact place where the dead body was kept under the ground.

There was a slightly raised stair beside the wall which divided the room with the cenotaphs and the area outside it and if we stand in its exact middle and clap, our clap will echo.

Then we went inside the room where the emperor Humayun’s cenotaph is made. Right in the middle, there was emperor Humayun’s Cenotaph and in the sides, there were small gates leading to some other rooms with more cenotaphs. There were three more rooms and every room had two cenotaphs.

Then we went out from the main room and went to the main garden of the Mausoleum. There we sat down and Sarthak Sir told us about the Charbagh concept of gardens and the various things which are common in all Muslim Buildings.

Then the other group joined us and we went back into the bus. Then we left for Old Fort. After 20 minutes, we reached the Old Fort.

There at the entrance, we were told about Dinpanah, the name of the city inside the Old Fort. Then we were again divided into two groups but this time all the children of our class were in the same group. The other group had gone to the archaeological museum inside the fort. And our group had lunchtime so we ate our food while sitting in the garden just opposite the entrance of the fort and the museum. We also got Mango Jumpin from the school. Then after 15 minutes, our lunchtime finished and our turn came to go the museum.

We took a notebook and a pen from our bags, kept our bags outside the museum and went inside. There were many artifacts from the Aryan period, Gupta period, Mughal period and the Delhi sultanate period. There were artifacts like pots from the ancient times, stone tools, etc.

There was a Baoli or a Step well just opposite the museum. We went down some of the steps and then sat down there. Sarthak sir was some steps below from us. He told us the functions of a step well, its uses, and the material which is used to make it. Then we went to a small mosque which was made inside the fort by Sher Shah Suri. There again we sat down and Sarthak sir told us about the structure of all mosques and how to do Warzu, which is the holy cleaning of hands, feet and face before reading the namaz. Then we sat down in the garden for 15 minutes and relaxed for some time. Then we went to the light and sound show which is held every evening at The Old Fort from 7 pm to 8 pm. In it light is projected at the main wall of the Old Fort and there are voices coming from the speaker. The topic is about the different rulers of Delhi including Sultans, Mughal emperors, and governors from the early times to the 20th century, hence the title Ishq-e-Dilli. Some famous rulers of Delhi were Razia Sultan, Mughal Emperor Humayun and Mughal Emperor Babur amongst others. It was the best part of the trip. I had very much fun in the trip and the Humayun Tomb and the Old Fort are a must visit place in Delhi and if you ever go there don’t forget to watch the Sound and Light show as it is also shown in English.
