A Workshop on Writing

A few days ago my mother asked me about another workshop on writing, named The Story of Emoticons, held at my parents’ friend, Manmeet Narang’s house. In another blog of mine, “A Session on Writing”, I have mentioned Ishween. It was her mother who was the facilitator and it was kept at their house. I reached there at 10 a.m. we all sat on stools and mattresses. There were 9 girls and just 2 boys, including me.

We all stood in a circle and had to pass a small ball to anyone and he/she had to introduce himself/herself.

We then were all given a partner and had to share our happiest moment with them and they would also have to do the same.

We continued the same with most embarrassing moment and most disappointing moment.

We were then asked to try to share different emotions with just our hands and the rules were,

  • We couldn’t open our eyes.
  • We couldn’t speak

The emotions given were happiness, anger, depression, sadness and excitement.

We had to express the same emotions again, but this time we were allowed to open our eyes and the only rule was that we couldn’t speak.

We had to express them once again, but now we were allowed to speak, as well as open our eyes.

Then we went into the adjoining room to take notebooks, pens, clipboards and small tables for the next activity.

We had to watch a short movie by Disney called Partly Cloudy but as the video couldn’t load, we first took a short break. We ate Oreo, Lays and popcorn along with mango juice.

Then we watched the short movie. In the movie, there were many clouds which made animal and human babies from clouds and then poured life into them. There were birds which delivered the babies to their respective parents. But there was one cloud which couldn’t create humans, puppies and kittens like other clouds but created dangerous animals like crocodiles and only 1 bird used to help him. Then one day, the cloud made a baby porcupine and the bird was very scared to deliver it.

Then they paused the video and told us to complete the story. Here is what I wrote,

“Then the cloud gave a baby shark in a large bag. The bird went just low enough that her feet were touching the surface of the water and dropped the bag into the water.

When it reached back to the clouds, looking shabbier than ever, it saw a whole variety of cloud animals which hadn’t yet been given skin but were alive in a cloud form. When a cloud dog leapt at the bird in a playful way, the bird got shocked and fell down in shock.

When it got close enough to the ground to see clearly, it was even more shocked, the porcupine which it was scared of, had got a bedsheet stuck on top of him. The bedsheet  was folded many times thus making a soft cushion and as luck had it, the bird landed right on top of the cushion, thus saving its life.”

Everyone liked my story much.

We all stood in a circle and had a bowl full of coins in the center and we had to throw a small ball to anyone with our eyes closed and he/she had to see the year on the coin and name an event with some significance to ourselves which happened in that year.

Then we all made a tight circle and we had to rotate as fast on the spot as we could and simultaneously make a buzzing sound.

Then we had our lunch. There were Pav Bhaji, Chilli Chicken, noodles and Mango Juice. We also got a Dairy Milk for dessert.

We made a circle again and we had to throw the ball to anyone and he/she had to name any character he/she has some resemblance with. I chose Fred Weasley from Harry Potter as we both are very funny and can make humour at all things.

Then we were given a set of words and we had to make a small story or paragraph out of them in 5 minutes. The words were porcupine, happiness, spectacles, fantasy, chocolate, sky and sword.

Here is what I wrote, (it’s too silly)

Once upon a time there was a porcupine who liked reading fantasy, eating chocolate and playing sword fighting. He could fly in the sky and also used to wear spectacles. He was always joyful and filled with happiness.

Mine was not the best but it made everyone laugh.

Next there was a slow music and we had to close our eyes and Manmeet ma’am said some lines about how we were a child and grew up and we got a time machine and had a chance to go to the future or the past and where would we want to go.

Here is what I wrote,

I would love to go back into the past when I was four years old. Then I wouldn’t have to study much and write exams and I would just play with my friends and parents. I would be completely carefree and have fun. I’d like to go to my 4th birthday as I went to Adventure Island, an amusement park with my parents on that day. There were many rides and I had a lot of fun. Next I would like to go 5 months ahead of my 4th birthday as I went to a foreign country for the 1st time.

Then we all sat in a rectangle and there was a bowl with some wooden hearts in them, we all had to take a heart each and tell what we learnt from the workshop.

Then Manmeet ma’am had baked a cake for us as we were her 1st batch of children who had attended the workshop. It was topped with gems and was very yummy.

Then we all got a mug which had “Happiness is following your heart” written on them and a small scroll as a memoir for the workshop. We all wrote feedback on chart papers which were taped to the wall. Then after some time my mother came to pick me up and I narrated the whole day’s experience to her on the way back home.
